History of Movember: How It Has Become the Phenomenon It Is Today

‘Movember’ is a worldwide annual celebration of themoustache, which takes place throughout the month of November andits purpose is to highlight men’s health issues, particularlyawareness of prostate and testicular cancers. One of the main reasons for the rise of Movember is because menare particularly lax when it comes to looking after their health incomparison to women. There is an attitude amongst many men that ifa complaint is ignored it will go away; that could be a majorreason why the life expectancy of UK women exceeds their malecounterparts by a full five years. On the whole men are much more reluctant to discuss healthissues publically and also more likely to put off a trip to thedoctor until absolutely necessary because of painful symptoms. Ofcourse, by the time an illness has taken hold to the extent wherethere is constant pain or discomfort it may be too late to receivea cure. That’s doubly tragic as many conditions that lead todeath can be cured at the early stages of detection. So, Movember aims to get men more health aware by putting a funtwist on extremely serious issues. ‘Mo’ is slang formoustache and replaces the ‘No’ from the eleventh monthof the year to produce Movember. During November men’s healthissues are highlighted and the entire programme is presented in ajovial way but delivering a serious and worthy message; to raisefunds and find a cure for prostate cancer. It is the month that MoBros down razors and grow a Mo from scratch! The Movember Foundation is a not-for-profit charity thatoperates worldwide and is responsible for promoting the healthinitiative each year. It started in 2003 in Melbourne, Australia bya group determined to bring back the moustache as a fashion item. The following year the campaign became associated with raisingfunds for prostate cancer and managed to bank an impressiveAU$55,000 on behalf of the Prostate Cancer Foundation of Australia.Over the last five years the campaign has expanded throughout thewestern world raising more than £30 million for prostatecancer research. This year the month long event is sponsored bymens clothingoutlet Burton and their limited edition Mo Gear T-shirts andtrunks.Promoting early diagnosis of prostate cancer and its subsequenttreatment as well as ploughing funds into research is thecontinuing aim of Movember. As more men and indeed Mo Sistas– women who support Mo Bros – become aware of theinitiative, the total of funds raised is also increasingsignificantly. Whether male or female, if you are interested inmen’s health make sure you support Movember – this year andevery year!Adam Singleton writes for a digital marketing agency.
