From California to Punjab, foodies get set for a global fanfare

BANGALORE : For all you food lovers, here’s some exciting newscoming your way. Bangalore’s eating-out market is getting ready toopen its doors to some big international restaurant brands as wellas domestic brands. More excitingly, some of these big names arelooking to open shop just before the year-end festivities kick off.Top on the charts are two big names coming from California, TraderVic’s and California Pizza Kitchen (CPK). JSM, a partnershipbetween noted restaurateurs Jay Singh and Sanjay Mahtani that runnoted brands like Hard Rock Cafe and Shiro, will launch both TraderVic’s and CPK in December. In addition, Mai Tai Lounge, a high-endresto-bar format of Trader Vic’s will also be launched.Mumbai-based popular fine dining restaurant, Indigo, whichspecializes in modern European cuisine, is planning on bringing itsdelhi format, Indigo Delhi to Bangalore. But this will take sometime. Sigree, the Indian fine dining brand fromSpeciality Restaurants(promoters of MainlandChina) will debut shortly in the city. Explore here Restaurants inDelhiWhile, Mai Tai Lounge will be located in Orion Mall,Malleswaram-Rajajinagar, Trader Vic’s and CPK will be opening inPhoenix Market City, Whitefield. CPK is a casual diningrestaurant with a focus on gourmet pizzas, the Californianway. On the other hand, Trader Vic’s is a Polynesian-styledrestaurant, with a menu that showcases cuisines from around theworld including Chinese, Japanese, Polynesian, Vietnamese, Thai,French and Californian. According to Jay Singh, co-founder &executive director, JSM Corporation, “After Delhi and Mumbai,Bangalore reports a high billing rate in the restaurant business.Bangalore has fast caught up with Mumbai when we look at thebilling average, but Delhi is still 20%-25% higher then bothcities.” However, Singh adds that when it comes to gettingrestaurant and liquor licences, Bangalore is 10 times moreexpensive than Mumbai and Delhi.Another noted fine dining restaurant brand,Punjab Grill, by Jiggs Kalra opened its doors in the city recently.”People in the city have become more adventurous, especially theyounger crowd like to experiment a lot when it comes to eating out.This is definitely a big leap from what the scene was a while ago,”says Anjan Chatterjee, chairman and MD, Speciality Restaurants.Speciality Restaurants, whose brands include Mainland China, oh!Calcutta, Flame and Grill, will be launching its Indianfine dining restaurantbrand, Sigree, in Indiranagar. Thecompany also has plans of opening Sigree in either Jayanagar orKoramangala. However, in the next one month, the company’s 5thMainland China outlet will open in Orion.
