His father, an alcoholic, left them when he was eight years old, and his mother, Joséphine, took care of Maurice and his two elder brothers, Charles and Paul. Maurice dropped out of school at age 10 to pursue a career as an acrobat, but a serious accident ended that career, and work in other menial jobs as an electrician, carpenter’s apprentice, printer, and even a doll painter.

He turned his talents to singing and acting and became the partner of Fréhel 190. During World War I, as a National Service personnel in the French army, he was wounded in battle and captured as a prisoner of war by the Germans for two years. He learned English from fellow prisoners.

After the war, Chevalier returned to Paris and recorded several songs, including “Louise” and “Valentine” (1924).
