Join the News God Team as we celebrate the birthday of some famous people born today:
Alfred Dreyfus will have been 165 years old today.
Today is the birthday of famous French artillery officer Alfred Dreyfus, who was wrongfully accused and convicted, due to antisemitism, of being a spy for the German Empire in 1894.
Alfred Dreyfus was a victim of judicial conspiracy because of his Alsatian origin and Jewish ethnicity and faith. He was sentenced to degradation and deported after a secret court martial hearing on January 5, 1895, to the penal colony on Devil’s Island to be imprisoned until his death.
A series of investigations by French intelligence, led by Lieutenant Colonel Georges Picquart, found Alfred Dreyfus innocent and Major Ferdinand Walsin Esterhazy, the real traitor. The evidence proving Alfred Dreyfus’s innocence was covered up, but a report of Alfred’s innocence was leaked to the press, which resulted in a major political crisis during the Third Republic, known as the Dreyfus Affair.
Émile Zola led a campaign for Alfred Dreyfus’s innocence after a series of publications resulted in Dreyfus’s pardon by President Émile Loubet in 1899. He was acquitted by a military commission, rehabilitated, and reinstated in the French Army, with a promotion to the rank of major.
Alfred was born to Raphaël and Jeannette Dreyfus Libmann on October 9, 1859, in Mulhouse, French Empire. He later specialized as an artillery officer at the artillery school at Fontainebleau.
Alfred Dreyfus, 31, married 20-year-old Lucie Eugénie Hadamard on April 18, 1891. The couple was blessed with two children: Pierre (1891–1946) and Jeanne (1893–1981).
In October 1907, he was granted retirement from the Army due to ill health at age 48 but re-entered the Army as a major of artillery during World War I. He died at age 75 in July 1935.
